Accounts are only as good as their reporting systems and the care taken to maintain their data integrity (complete, consistent and valid). Without such underlying data integrity many accounting reports will be worse than useless - they will be misleading.

The most flexible accounting systems for SMEs are written using a database, for these the reporting facilities are endless and client information needs can be fully and seamlessly empowered.

Then, complete customisation is possible, and third-party products such as Business Objects may be used to interrogate and report on the underlying details.

Where this is not so, there are almost always facilities for exporting data and these exported files may then be reported on and analysed by using a database.
